Cars and movies go hand in hand. Cars can add glamour, action and thrills to keep you gripped and boost the drama of the storyline. So with this being said, we’ve compiled five films with iconic car sequences.
Bullitt
King of Cool, Steve McQueen stars as police lieutenant Frank Bullitt in this 1960s classic. A Mafia informant is in the protection of tough guy Bullitt, the action ensues as mob hitmen go after the informant. Bullitt includes one of the most famous car chases in film history, as McQueen’s 1968 Ford Mustang chases the baddies Dodge Charger through the hilled streets of San Francisco.
The Italian Job
Another film with a classic car chase, The Italian Job sees Michael Caine and his crackpot team of thieves make their way through the piazzas of Turin and the Italian Alps with gold bullion in the back of their red, white and blue minis. The movie did wonders for the sales of the now iconic car even though its star, Michael Caine, couldn’t actually drive when the movie was made. The Italian Job took the cliffhanger ending quite literally as it finishes with their bus hanging perilously off the side of a mountain road.
Fast and Furious franchise
Miami, Tokyo, Iceland, Havana, London, and Rio de Janeiro are just some of the amazing locations used as settings in the Fast and Furious franchise. A franchise of eight movies that have made over £3.5 billion at the box office worldwide, no wonder there are two more films in the pipeline. The films follow a similar theme where a group of misfits in souped-up sports cars race their way through these glamorous locations taking down bad guys and getting into a lot of scrapes doing so.
Mad Max
Mad Max is set in a dystopian future, with the world plunged into war, famine and all around chaos. Max Rockatansky, played by Mel Gibson, is a policeman who takes on a vicious biker gang that killed his wife and son in retaliation for the death of one of its members. Max takes on the wild bikers in a customised 1973 Ford Falcon GT Coupe with the Australian outback as the setting to this post-apocalyptic action thriller that quickly became a cult classic.
Back to the Future
In this 1980s sci-fi comedy classic, small-town California teen Marty McFly, played by Michael J. Fox, finds himself thrown back into the 1950s when an experiment by his eccentric scientist friend Doc Brown, played by Christopher Lloyd, goes wrong. Travelling through time in a modified DeLorean car, Marty encounters young versions of his parents and must make sure that they fall in love or he’ll cease to exist, while also having to return to his own time to save the life of Doc Brown. The now-defunct American car manufacturer DeLorean has become synonymous with the Back to the Future franchise of films.
