It can be all too easy to overlook your garage as a potential target for thieves and burglars, especially if your garage is attached to your house and you keep valuable products in it. However, there are ways to protect yourself against these criminals, and it can be easier then you might think.
Use a zip tie
It may shock you to hear that your garage door could be broken into in as little as six seconds, with nothing more than a coat hanger, reaching the emergency release handle! Don’t believe us? Well, see for yourself in this viral video.
Don’t fear, there is an easy fix for this and it comes in the form of a small cable tie. When connected to a loop in the emergency latch, a cable tie will stop thieves from disabling the automatic door and gaining entry. By using a small, thin cable tie, you can pull hard to break the tie and open the door in the case of an emergency.
Keep your garage door opener out of sight
For convenience purposes, it might seem practical to keep the garage door opener in your car, especially if you keep your car in the garage. But doing so makes can put you at risk of a break in. It’s better to attach your lock to your car keys and have them in the house with you. If you have to leave it in the car, make sure the lock is out of sight or in a locked glove compartment.
The best hardware
Side doors or ones inside that lead to the house are easy access points for thieves to kick in and enter your property. That’s where devices like Door Devil come in handy. These doorstops screw into the framework of the door and prevent this from happening. You can view this video to see how these products work.
Install a sensor alarm and lights
An easy fix that will deter any intruder is to install a garage door alarm that will be triggered through motion sensors and sound an alarm when triggered. This can be doubled or even tripled up with motion sensing lights and security cameras that turn on when triggered and alert you when they do.
Keep a radio on
This is one of the cheapest and most effective way of deterring a burglar who may be trying to gain access to your garage. The idea being that any noise will signal that the home is occupied and so will make a burglar think twice about trying to enter.
Choose the right materials
Last, but most certainly not least is to install a metal or solid wooden garage door, so it’s strong enough to stand up to thieves. Your possessions will be at a much higher risk of being stolen if your garage door is worn or in disrepair.
